Limassol is a spirited and cosmopolitan seaside town. The second largest town and the major port of Cyprus it is in the heart of the main vine growing areas and houses the islands main wineries. It has the largest number of foreign or 'offshore' companies as well as a busy tourist industry. Limassolians have a reputation for enjoying themselves and is the venue for the annual Wine Festival in September, a wine extravaganza where wine flows freely for everyone to enjoy.In February Carnival celebrations are in full swing with fancy dress balls, parades and festivities. Limassol also boasts some of the most spectacular night-clubs and discos in the area.



There are a number of well preserved archeological sites in and around the town from the ancient city kingdom of Amathus in the east, Limassol Castle in the old part of town where King Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre whom he crowned Queen of England and Kolossi Castle to the west, former seat of power to the Knights Templar and still used for authentic medieval banquets.

 


Further westward is the ancient city kingdom of Kourion with its beautifully restored amphitheatre,still used for musical recitals, concerts and plays.


Surrounding Limassol town are delightful villages still retaining their traditional architecture and gentle pace of life making them ideal in which to taste and enjoy the famous hospitality accompanied food and wine.Places of interest would include Limassol Castle which houses the Cyprus Medieval Museum, the District Archaeological Museum, the Folk Art Museum and the Limassol Municipal Art Gallery. Wine factories offer tours of their premises with wine tasting at the end of the tour. Also in the vicinity of Limassol is the Salt Lake at Akrotiri where thousand of migrating birds, especially the pink flamingo can be observed in winter. Limassol is well positioned for easy access to all main cities and attractions on the island, and Le Meridien Limassol is only 35-45 minutes by car from Larnaca and Paphos airports respectively.
